The Exchange

The Exchange has been providing daytime and evening activities to young people and adults with a range of disabilities aged 16 years upwards, since 1993. The service offers a resource centre for local people from which community based opportunities can be co-ordinated.

Opportunities are provided to engage individuals in a range of activities such as leisure/recreation, practical tasks, education, personal skills development, health and beauty and any other preferred activities in which individuals may choose to participate, at both The Exchange and within the wider community.

The service is wheelchair-accessible throughout and provides a number of different areas, such as a fully equipped sensory room, one to one teaching rooms, a computer room and two main areas where individuals can enjoy a range of recreational activities, receive specialist support such as physiotherapy / mobility exercises or simply enjoy the positive social aspect of The Exchange.

P1000434The one to one room provides a quiet area where individual activities can be undertaken including music sessions, skill teaching and communication development.

The Exchange supports the principles of “Inclusive Communication” and aims to maintain an environment where individuals have the resources required and the opportunity to communicate using their preferred method. Many of the people who attend the Exchange have additional support needs, such as physical and/or sensory impairments or display behaviours that may present as challenging.

The number of sessions anyone attends is determined by an assessment of need, which is carried out by the Local Authority and Hamelin Trust.

In June 2009 the Exchange became an accredited centre for National Proficiency Test Council (NPTC) through City and Guilds.
